When Caring is Everybody’s Business

by PromdiBlogger on January 19, 2008

The thought of care homes never entered my mind until my mom had a stroke. I was thinking how fortunate we were that there are five of us siblings so there is always somebody to look after our parents. What if I was an only child and working? Who will take care of my elderly parents?

I used to think putting our loved ones in care homes as a sign that we don’t care enough. Now I think otherwise. In today’s times when everybody is employed, we can no longer afford to leave our jobs and care for our parents full-time. Somebody has to pay the bills. And leaving them to untrained helper at home is not the same as getting them professional help at home or at care homes.

Fortunately for those in Western countries like the UK, they have a lot of choices when it comes to care homes. Search portal like bettercaring.com make it easy for them to access information on care options, search the database for available care homes in the locality, and a discussion area. The discussion area is what I find useful even for those living outside the UK. Reviews of products used by the elderly are provided to help you in making buying decisions. There is also a forum which provides a venue for sharing experiences and asking questions on topics that the elderly and their loved ones are facing every day.

Caring transcends boundary and race so the issues and problems that are relevant to Western countries are more or less the same we in Asian countries are facing. Websites such as bettercaring.com are invaluable resource to get the latest in caring for the elderly.
