We will survive
I may not be there with you but my heart goes out to my fellow Ilonggos. Many have lost their homes, properties, and loved ones when Typhoon Frank vent its wrath of destruction on Iloilo, the worst the province has experienced. I can only imagine the damage. Justice Secretary Gonzalez even compared it to the destruction brought by Mount PInatubo eruption. I can’t help but cry while looking at photos of the flood.
A friend’s house was flooded up to the roof. A boss’ car was swept by floodwater. I heard a story about a Mayor who cried while watching helplessly a family on top of their roof as they were swept by the current. Poor and rich families were not spared. Typhoons do not discriminate on status. It destroys anything and everything on its path. I am fortunate my family was spared. My sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones.
I watched a woman on the news who vent her anger on the Sulpicio Lines staff for their lack of aid for the victims families. Nobody dared stop her. How could they? Her parents and five younger siblings were on board that ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars which sank off the coast of Romblon at the height of Typhoon Frank. There are still around 700 still missing up to this minute.
It is admirable how the human spirit survived tragedies like this. Filipinos are known survivors. We survived martial law, bombings, typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It is our close ties with our family, community and our faith that probably helped us overcome these difficult times. Today is no different.
Habang may buhay, may pag-asa (While there’s life, there’s hope). Tomorrow will be a better day.
