See, as I was expecting, Pacquiao did squish/crush Cotto and made a record as the first boxer to win seven titles in as many weight divisions. Cotto was bloody and messed up after the referee stopped the fight on the 12th round. Cotto is a real sportsman. He’s humble enough to admit that Pacquiao is the best fighter he had ever faced. Though I’m happy Pacquiao won, I still pity Cotto for all the beating he received. After all, boxing is a brutal sport. There were boxers who died in the ring.
Which brings me to the fate of another Pinoy boxer, Z Gorrez, who collapsed after winning his fight due to internal bleeding. He may never go back to boxing again but I just hope he gets better for the sake of his family. I feel a little guilty in celebrating Pacquiao’s record breaking win knowing that there’s another Pinoy boxer fighting for his life.
Sometimes when I watch a boxing match, I fell like I’m watching Roman Gladiators killing each other and I feel bad for cheering one of them. Let’s cheer for the winner but I hope we don’t forget the fallen boxers. They may end up losers but they deserve our respect and applause too. It’s not easy to have your face beaten to a pulp, or worse, to endure long term disability.
My heart goes to the family of Z Gorrez. I hope he gets well soon.
