The Good Sikyu

Sometimes we get inspiration from the most unlikely persons. Last night I had to pass by the office to get the files for the report I have to work on during the week. The security guard on duty requested me to stay awhile for he’s going to buy some medicines. When he got back I noticed him smiling from ear to ear. It seems he can’t wait to be asked for he immediately told me what happened.

While at the drugstore, he noticed a man standing beside him at the counter. The man was dressed shabbily and looked haggard, like he lost a lot of sleep. When the guard received his change, the man kept looking at him and at the change in his hand. He seem to start to say something but decided not to. Just by looking at the man, the guard felt pity so he immediately took a P50 bill from his change and gave it to the man. The man couldn’t thank him enough. Apparently, the man’s wife was in the hospital but he has no money to buy her medicines.

I jokingly told the guard that I didn’t expect it from him but nonetheless, he will be blessed by what he did. He told me he felt so happy that he was able to help somebody in need. I on the other hand, felt guilty and humbled by what he did. The skeptic in me would always look beyond appearances. How can I be so sure that he’s telling the truth? Yet, the guard didn’t have any second thoughts on giving the man his two-meals worth. Fifty pesos may not be enough to buy medicine for the man’s wife but it sure is enough to fill an empty stomach.

Oh well, I just turned 30 today. If somebody asked me what my biggest accomplishment in 3 decades of my life was, I don't have a clear answer. I'm always frightened at the thought of leaving this world without so much as a stir. I have probably set very high...

I was in the jeepney to the office this morning when I heard the song. I've heard it before but except for admiring the good melody and the beautiful voice of Carrie Underwood, I haven't really paid much attention to it. I don't know what has gotten into me but...
