Do you pronounce Google as Googol or Googel?
It’s not our fault that we were born in the provinces. It’s not our fault too that the national language Filipino is based on the Tagalog language. So please don’t make fun of us if we speak Tagalog with a different accent or pronounce an English word differently from the way Tagalog speakers do.
I once attended a convention with participants coming from different provinces. I was a bit embarrassed when a co-participant asked me if I was joking when I say traysikol when referring to tricycle. I told him, that’s what we call it from our part of the country.
You see, tricycle is called “traysikel” in Luzon and “traysikol” in Visayas. Come to think of it, there are a lot of words that we seem to pronounce differently. In Tagalog, a rooster’s crow is “tiktilaok” but it’s “tukturuok” in Hiligaynon. The same goes with noodles, it’s nodels in Tagalog ang nodols in Hiligaynon.

What do you think? Is it our tongue or our hearing that’s different in regions? Or is it our use of the language that’s influencing the way we hear sounds? Any linguistics in the house, sound off please.

Why are they giving so much fuss about it? Look for these words in Encarta Dictionaries etc. Watch and hear how Americans or Britons pronounce trycycle; its not “traysikel” but “traysikol”. The same goes with noodles, it’s nodols not nodels. Yeah, come to think of it, there are a lot of English words that Tagalogs and other Luzonians pronounce differently. This is plain bigotry- regional supremacy. Zamboanguenos also deride Visaya and other non-Chavacano speaking inhabitants in Zamboanga City the way Tagalogs and others do. They pronounce cabbage as “kebids” not “kabbij” or “kabids”. See, with other Filipinos with similar lineages like me, how lots of English words are lost in pronounciation. By the way i am a Mindanaoan with mixed Waray and Ilocano blood and mixed Spanish, Chinese and Korean forebears. Hiligaynons, Cebuano, Warays and other Visayan and Mindanaoan tribes unite!
