A few days ago I read in the news that world renowned Filipino architect and Urban Planner Felino Palafox, Jr. was tapped by the Iloilo City Government to craft the city’s 2009-2020 Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
Architect Palafox recognized the potential for development of Iloilo City’s 21.3-kilometer coastline and 113-kilometer riverbank to accommodate restaurants and other leisure establishments. I know several people, including myself, wished the same thing. We hope the riverbank of Iloilo River be developed like Roxas Boulevard. When that happens, we will no longer be afraid to stroll along the riverbank at night. If it can be done in Marikina City, there’s no reason why it’s not possible in Iloilo City.
He also noted that the Iloilo River can be used for ferry service as an alternative route. Imagine how many minutes can be saved in travel time if this will become a reality. It will also be a potential source of revenue if turned into a tourist attraction.
Iloilo City is an old city and has seen rapid development during the 1700 to 1900s. No proper urban planning was probably done by the Spanish during the colonial period. One can observe today that the city’s main streets get congested by traffic especially during peak hours.
I saw Architect Palafox during the launching of Palmetto Project of St. Rafael Development Corp. (SRDC) in Bacolod City last year. He was the master planner of Palmetto and other subdivision projects of SRDC. Iloilo City made the right choice by tapping his expertise.
