Philippine Silver Medal Won by an Ilongga

by PromdiBlogger on August 26, 2008

The Philippines gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics was further boosted by Ilongga Mary Jane Estimar who won the Silver Medal in Wushu. Albeit only a demonstration sport, the medals won by the team give us reason to celebrate and hope for a better performance in 2012 London Olympics. Four medals in wushu were won by the team, Willy Wang – Gold, Mary Jane Estimar – Silver, and Bronze Medal each for Benjie Rivera and Marian Mariano.

The 25-year old athlete from Villa Arevalo, Iloilo City showed strength not only of body but of spirit as well. It was only months before while training in China that Estimar’s father died and she also endured ankle and shoulder injury before her fight for the gold medal. She was embraced by her Chinese opponent and was well applauded after the fight.

Our Filipino athletes, although medal-less also did a good job since most have broken Philippine records. We are proud of you guys! I think our wushu athletes should be given rewards even if their sport is not included in the regular sport of the Olympics. A medal, counted or not in the medal standing, brings as much pride.

I would beg to disagree. We have a terrible Olympics/Athletics program that resulted to a very poor performance. The gold in a demo sport does not guarantee a future Olympic medal. Same thing happened in Taekwondo before. We won a gold on it as a demo sport but right now we haven’t competed well with the sport in the Olympics. Sano pa ta makagold man?

Congrats!

Sana maging reason ito upang PAUNLARIN NG GOBYERNO ang ating mga ATLETA para sa 2012 olympics, at ng di tayo umaasa sa HIMALA.

Congrats ulit!
