Philippine Earthquake predicted on July 18, 2008

by PromdiBlogger on July 9, 2008

Paso Robles EarthquakeThe prediction that the Philippines will experience an earthquake has been going around in emails, text, and blogs for quite sometime now. A certain Juseleeno Nobulega Daroose, a Brazilian teacher, predicted that on July 18, 2008 an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 will rock the Philippines.

I saw the Mini Series 10.5 last Saturday on Studio 23 and based on the plot, a scientist has predicted the possible location of the earthquake and it’s magnitude. The idea seemed plausible but a little Googling will lead you to several sites revealing factual errors of the series. According to Earthquakecountry.info, the magnitude of an earthquake is related to the length of the fault. In order to have a 10.5 magnitude quake, you have to have a fault that circles the Earth.

If we look at the Earthquake Map uploaded by Inquirer.net, it shows earthquakes recorded this year were not more than 6.9 magnitude. However, the Baguio earthquake on July 16, 1990 was a 7.5 magnitude on the Richter scale and so far it was considered to have cost the biggest destruction in the country. The largest so far recorded was 9.5 in Chile on May 22, 1960. So, this means a magnitude 8.1 is possible, could it possibly happen in the Philippines? I leave that to the scientists.

Director Renato Solidum Jr. of Phivolcs had earlier dismissed the prediction as a hoax saying “There is no basic science behind it.” According to the director, no science yet can determine the exact location and magnitude of an earthquake. So, what do we make out of the 4.5 magnitude earthquake felt in several parts of Luzon last Sunday night? The Philippines is in the earthquake belt after all, so this is quite normal and a magnitude 4.5 is still light.

Juseleeno Nobulega Daroose seemed to have a penchant for predicting disasters. If he has predicted the path taken by typhoon Frank then I might have full belief in his capacity. Anybody can freely claim to have predicted something. There’s predictions based on the ‘bolang kristal” then there’s predictions based on science. I opt to lean on the latter. Even scientists at Phivolcs with all their training and equipment could not predict an earthquake.

Others say we won’t lose anything if we believe and be prepared. Do we really have to hear a prediction of a disaster in order to be prepared? We are on the Pacific Ring of Fire, we are on the typhoon belt, we are on the earthquake belt. We don’t need predictions. Common sense would tell you to be careful and be prepared at ALL times.

We’ll just think positively eh and be nice to the environment. I’m reminded of the Iloilo flood, that’s mother nature reacting to all the abuse given her.

Don’t worry, it’s really is not true. Just the same we should be cautious at all times.

The scariest thing about natural calamities like earthquakes, typhoons and tornadoes is that they are beyond our control. Its the after effects that we can control and minimize the damage. Do we need anymore proof of just how costly cutting trees can be? Mother Nature can only take so much abuse. Throw a rock at Mother Nature and she throws a boulder right back at you.

Back in highschool, we had a subject called Ecofeminism rather than CAT. While it took me a long time to fully understand the need for such a subject, it dawned on me that the if we treat Mother Nature with the same reverence and respect we give our own mothers, surely She wouldn’t feel the need to “discipline” us, would She?

Well that’s something he did not see in his ‘bolang kristal’. :-D No specific place was mentioned.

How true indeed. I wonder what will happen when PNOC cut off the trees inside the Mt. Kanlaon buffer zone. What if the volcano start to spew boulders at them? :-D Ahay… I hope they can find a way for us to be energy efficient without having to cut off those trees.

The sisters at St. Scho are really progressive no? That’s why I’m gonna send my daughter there. Hehehe…Mahimo ko anay daughter.

Hey Cry:
How could you say that the news is true by just basing on the “INDIAN GIRL”. You even don’t know who that girl was! Your even asking on your other post “WHERE IN THE PHILIPPINES IS THE EARTHQUAKE?”
Keep in mind that there is no agency or even a device that scientists has created that could predicts an earthquake with exact date and time.
To all the readers down there, please be careful in posting comments. You may only adds-up the worries of our country men.
By the way, the only calamity that we have is the people in the government! Corrupt governance is the calamity that we have!
Cheers!
PEACE!!!

hindi naman talaga totoo na magkakalindol BUKAS!
it was a PREDICTION but we’ll never know how real this is until the very day comes..
pero in my own opinion, this is never gonna happen…
science tells all the”againsts” against it…

wala naman talagang earthquake na mapepredict lang ng isang imaginative dream..

pero, wag naman very confident..
we still don’t know where that dream came from..
is it just to threaten us?
we don’t know..
or is it just a little striking lie from this british national?
we still don’t know,..
but still safe–if we only hold on our faith
everything’s gonna be alright!

p.s. if you believe in this, you are just showing that you lack faith..
and the nore you believe in this prediction, the bigger the possibility that this would definitely happen..
