Let me borrow the title of teleserye “May Bukas Pa” to point out that for the Philippines, there’s still tomorrow. Unlike other people, I have never felt that we are hopeless. If you think the Pinoys are hopeless, then imagine what would an African in Darfur felt.
Events in the past month were nothing but inspiring. The thousands who went to the cortege of former President Cory Aquino proved that Filipinos still unite when the occasion calls for it. I watched the funeral procession on TV and I can’t help shed my tears. My tears were those of sadness and tribute for a great woman. My tears were also for the realization that everything Tita Cory sacrificed for the country did not go to waste. It was a great time to be a Filipino.
When Pandora’s box was opened, all the ills were released to the world and what was left was hope. It doesn’t matter how many problems our country face today as long as we continue to hope, that’s all that matters.
Every now and then we see and hear goodness in our fellow Filipinos. Just this morning I read in the Inquirer about a certain Ralph Reuben Morales who is postponing his marriage and gave up a promising job at Ayala Foundation to join a movement that hoped to launch Gov. Grace Padaca for president. It’s not often that a person gives up the finer things in life in exchange for his idelas. It’s a very honorable thing to do.
We will be commemorating the death of Ninoy this August 23. Hopefully, we will also remember his ideals and live by his example. We don’t have to follow his martyrdom in order to be like him. We just have to live an honorable life and do what we can for our country.
We are a great nation because among us came Ninoy and Cory.
