Mainstream Media Also Clueless on Philippine Provinces

by PromdiBlogger on September 17, 2008

I admit I’m not also very good with Philippine Geography and I can’t memorize all the Philippine provinces. But if I make that mistake I’m sure you’ll forgive me. However, if mainstream media such as a television news report would make such a mistake, it’s entirely a different story.

The writers of TV 5 just made that mistake in one of their news tonight. A story about a pilot plant for bio-diesel from jathropa in Bayawan City, Oriental Negros was referred to as a “Dumaguete town” as if Bayawan is a town in Dumaguete.

For those who don’t know it yet, Dumaguete City is the capital of Oriental Negros while Bayawan is a component city of Oriental Negros. A similar blunder was made by Touch Mobile for their TV Ad when they featured Masskara dancers when in fact they were referring to Dumaguete City. Masskara is the premier festival of Bacolod City which is the capital of Negros Occidental.

The two provinces of Oriental Negros and Negros Occidental comprise the Negros Island. Negros Occidental belong to Region VI or the Western Visayas Region while Oriental Negros belong to Region VII or Central Visayas Region. Majority of the people of Negros Occidental are Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) speakers while Oriental Negros residents speak Cebuano. The confusion between the two provinces is the main reason why Oriental Negros opted to change its name from Negros Oriental.

Mainstream media should put their resources to good use by researching their news content. It wouldn’t also hurt for the anchors to be a little critical of the news they read. Most people still rely on you for information.

I’ve been to Bayawan once, about 8 years ago. We didn’t have anything to do on a Saturday afternoon so we drove from my Lola’s house in Dauin all the way to Bayawan. Fun times. Oriental Negros is a great place to explore.

Haven’t been to any Oriental Negros town/city except Dumaguete. Yup, the other half of the island is just as beautiful.

Im came from Negros so i know the place :D Bayawan is part of negros Oriental it has a road connected to Hinoba-an which is part of Negros Occidental why they featured the masskara festival of Bacolod in dumaguete. Dumaguete has a celebration called Buglasan festival if im not mistaken which they celebrate every Dec.When your planning to go Negros Oriental there are three route to choose.Dumaguete via San Carlos,Dumaguete via Mabinay,Bayawan to Dumaguete. I was been in Bayawan for maintenance work it takes me 7 hours to reach in Bayawan i leave Bacolod 2am the best thing is the food is cheaper :D :D I dont know I never been in that place for about 6 years now. Maybe there is a fishing spot in Bayawan to hunt down those biggies there I heard there is a blue fin in Bayawan maybe ill try to go their again maybe i can land those biggies :) ) :) ) :) )
