Invisibility Cloak Slowly Becoming a Reality

by PromdiBlogger on August 12, 2008

If you’ve watched Harry Potter I’m sure you’re quite familiar with the invisibility cloak given to him during his first year at Hogwarts. As the name suggests, the invisibility cloak makes anybody who slips into it invisible.

They happen only in fiction right? Wrong. There’s actually science behind the invisibility cloak. Just recently, researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, led by Xiang Zhang, were able to develop a material (metamaterial) which can bend visible light around 3D objects giving you the illusion that the object is invisible.

Once perfected,  this technology can have broad applications in the real world especially in the military. I’m sure this will not come cheap. But any government who wants to be ahead in the military intelligence would pay any price for this kind of technology. And if there’s an uber rich Peeping Tom out there, this will come in handy.

Me I would use the invisibility cloak everytime I’m late at work. Hey, I wasn’t late. I was here all the time. How about you, how will you use an invisibility cloak?

Yes, this is what they used in that 2002 James Bond movie, Die Another Day, the one with Halle Berry, where 007’s car “disappears” in the ice by bending light.
