It’s as if there’s a shortage of men. Actually, it’s raining men. It’s the good men who are disappearing fast.

By the time you reach the age 30, most good men your age are either married or they’re gay. And the gay men are also running after the good men. Sometimes, they even beat you to it. That’s why we often have this nagging feeling that when we reach 30, all’s lost.

But what do you know, there are men who prefer older women. In fact, one just snagged Raymond Bagatsing into marrying her, and she’s already 60 years old while Bagatsing is late 30s. Raymond Bagatsing married Cora Pastrana, columnist of three Filipino-American newspaper in the U.S. last November 21.

It’s Bagatsing’s second marriage. He used to be married to Lara Fabregas a few years back. I remember it was a whirlwind romance that didn’t last long. Will this one last long enough? Let’s wait and find out.

By the time you reach 60 and still unmarried, look to Cora Pastrana for inspiration. Or look at yourself in the mirror. If you look like Cory Quirino, don’t fret, there’s probably somebody out there who’s meant for you. Just hope he’s already old enough. Now, if you look like Madam Auring, well . . . I wish you luck and I hope you’re filthy rich.

It’s not our fault too that the national language Filipino is based on the Tagalog language. So please don’t make fun of us if we speak Tagalog with a different accent or pronounce an English word differently from the way Tagalog speakers do.

I once attended a convention with participants coming from different provinces. I was a bit embarrassed when a co-participant asked me if I was joking when I say traysikol when referring to tricycle. I told him, that’s what we call it from our part of the country.

You see, trycycle is called “traysikel” in Luzon and “traysikol” in Visayas. Come to think of it, there are a lot of words that we seem to pronounce differently. In Tagalog, a rooster’s crow is “tiktilaok” but it’s “tukturuok” in Hiligaynon. The same goes with noodles, it’s nodels in Tagalog ang nodols in Hiligaynon.

What do you think? Is it our tongue or our hearing that’s different in regions? Or is it our use of the language that’s influencing the way we hear sounds? Any linguistics in the house, sound off please.

Rediscovered? A lot of Filipinos violently reacted and commented on Yahoo! News, including myself. There’s a lot of tarsiers in the Island of Bohol, Philippines. Anybody claiming tarsiers were extinct is out of his mind.

However, we were wrong. The tarsier specie that was found was a totally different one from our Philippine Tarsier. Pygmy tarsier has a scientific name Tarsius pumilus while Philippine tarsier is Tarsier pumilus. Pygmy tarsier is a little smaller than our own Philippine tarsier. In fact, these are just two of the eight species of tarsiers in the world.

Pygmy Tarsier (Photo from Yahoo! News)

Pygmy tarsier was thought to be extinct since the last time a pygmy tarsier was found alive was in 1921 until a group of Indonesian scientists accidentally trapped and killed one in 2000. Lat August 2008 a group of researchers caught two males and one female tarsier in Sulawesi, Indonesia dispelling the belief that pygmy tarsiers were already extinct.

All the reactions, positive or otherwise, are also beneficial for Bohol, Philippines. Most commenters at Yahoo! Buzz provided a link to Bohol tarsier. As can be expected, a lot of people will be curious about Bohol and traffick to the site will increase.

Let’s just hope a lot of them will also visit the Philippines to see a live Philippine tarsier.

He’s really good at lying and has perfected it to a tee. The gall of the guy to think that Filipinos are stupid.

Bolante, was accused of masterminding the P728-million fertilizer fund scam. Imagine how that money could have helped our farmers if it was used correctly. Some people just cannot “moderate their greed.” Bolante is one of them and whoever is behind Bolante is the master of all thieves.

Bolante is really good at fooling people, it’s probably like a second skin to him. This Bolante, has fooled the whole Augustinian community. When the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City celebrated its centennial anniversary last 2004, the school gave recognition to their outstanding alumni, the 100 Outstanding Augustinians of the Century. Guess who’s on the list? Joc-Joc Bolante! Check out the USA Communitas Bulletin and browse to page 7 and you’ll see the name Jocelyn Bolante as one of the 100 Oustanding Augustinians of the Century under the Government Services Category.

Wow, he was recognized as an Outstanding Augustinian of the Century the year he allegedly masterminded the P728-million fertilizer fund scam. Such irony.

Imagine, I share the same alma mater with Bolante. The Augustinians should not be ashamed but it’s Bolante who should be ashamed of himself, if he knows what shame means. The university’s motto is “Virtus et Scientia”, virtue and science, Bolante do not know the meaning of virtue. St. Augustine must be turning in his grave for his most holy name to be attached to somebody as vile.

Bolante does not embody the whole Augustinian community but he’s giving the university a bad name. I think the univerity through the alumni association should do something about it. If the university conferred such recognition to Bolante, can it take it back? Can the university rectify itself? I do hope so.

Come to think of it, I graduated Chemical Engineering last 1998 and passed the Chemical Engineering Licensure Examination the same year. That was a decade ago, how time flies.

I enrolled in Chemical Engineering because of a scholarship I received. However, I did not end up working in a manufacturing plant or anything directly related to Chemical Engineering. My current job is into small business consultancy. Well, sometimes I get to use a little of my educational background and I find it easy learning technical stuff. But no more dealing with chemicals for me except for the Chemistry subject I teach.

Why in the world did I labor five years of my life in college but follow a different career path? I find work in the processing plant quite routine, lacking in human interaction.

Maybe I just love life in the province. Maybe I wasn’t just destined to be a practicing Chemical Engineer. I don’t even use the label anymore and I haven’t renewed my license since 1998. I still keep my license in my wallet for bragging rights.

I still keep myself updated with the current trends and developments in the profession by maintaining my membership with the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers and subscribing to Chemical Processing Magazine (which is free, by the way). I have no regrets taking up Chemical Engineering and I love my job too. Sometimes, we take a different path from what we have planned and what others expect us to take. How we lived it, I think, is what matters most.

The festival is also in celebration of the Feast of San Carlos de Borromeo, Patron Saint of San Carlos City, whose feast falls on November 4.

This First Class Component City of Negros Occidental celebrates the Pintaflores Festival every November 3-5. The highlight of the festival is a Streetdance and Ritual Competition on November 5. Here, streetdancers don colorful ethnic-inspired costumes and floral body tattoos. The floral body tattoos are reminiscent of the tattooed Visayans of pre-Spanish Negros. Upon the arrival of the Spanish settlement to the island of Negros, they discovered this unique tribal ritual of flower body tattooing and dubbed it as “Pintados de Flores” where the by-word Pintaflores is rooted.

There are two categories, the Open Invitational which is participated by cities and municipalities in Negros Island and the Pinta Bata which is participated by elementary schools. The streetdancing culminates in a ritual/showdown competition at the San Carlos City Auditorium.

A Search for Miss San Carlos City pageant ads glamor to the festival. The pageant likewise showcase the beauty of the Negrense women and the creativity of local designers in the colorful costumes of the contestants. This year, Miss Danielle Villaflor bested other contestants to be the Miss San Carlos City 2008.

People who have experienced this colorful festival will surely attest that the costumes and synchronized movements of the contingents to the rythmic beat of the drums and music will make them come again. Vamos San Carlos!

Yup, the first Starbucks in Western Visayas will be opening soon at 18th-Lacson St., bacolod City. I am a coffee drinker though I’m not the type who’s into gourmet coffee. As long as it has caffeine, that’s good enough for me.

However, I’m having second thoughts on drinking coffee upon reading an article about the effects of drinking coffee on women. The study says scientists discovered that drinking more than two cups of coffee per day can make women’s breasts shrink. I remembered I started drinking coffee when I as in elementary since everybody at home drinks coffee. So go figure.

“Coffee-drinking women do not have to worry their breasts will shrink to nothing overnight.

They will get smaller, but the breasts aren’t just going to disappear.”

Thank heavens! At least it will still be there.

The same study also discovered that drinking coffee helps lower the risk of developing breast cancer.

“It’s not all bad news for women however as the researchers also found that regular hits of caffeine can help to cut the risk of developing breast cancer.”

Well, I’d rather wear a Cup A than no cup at all.

Been living here in Bacolod City for almost five years now but I haven’t watched MassKara Streetdance live on the streets, not even once. I can be a killjoy sometimes, preferring the peace and quiet of Mambukal over the revelry of MassKara Festival. This year was different, I decided to be where the action was, right there on the streets of Bacolod. A decision that made me look at MassKara from a different perspective.

It was supposed to be just a meet-up with fellow forumers of Skyscrapercity Bacolod thread. Eventually, I ended up joining our small “coverage team” of the streetdance competition. I, with my little point and shoot camera, was there on the streets, brushing elbows with professional photographers. We have IDs mind you, and even more powerful than those of the media.

The wide expanse of Araneta Street was already crowded with spectators. I was expecting a mob but it was very orderly. When told to move back to give dancers enough space, the crowd obliged.

I forgot to bring sunblock but I didn’t mind getting sunburned, it was the least of my worries. Taking pictures and enjoying the event was more important. The costumes were very colorful and although it looked as though dancing with a mask and headdress was a breeze, I’m sure it’s not. I heard that some costumes weigh as much as 4 kg.

This year’s MassKara Festival music was all instruments, which is a welcome relief. Although it was a rehash of the previous year’s music, without the vocals especially the rap, it sounded better. I agree with what most people say, a live music would bring MassKara to a higher level. This will also give MassKara a chance to participate in the Aliwan Festival.

We spent hours of under the sun and running around with the dancers, still you won’t hear us complain. How can we? We’re covering one of Philippine’s most colorful festivals, up close and personal. I’m not even intimidated that others carry powerful and expensive cameras. My photos may not be as good as theirs but the memories they conjure are as beautiful.

Aside from the streetdance along Araneta Street, another attraction was the Electric MassKara parade along Lacson Street. Here, streetdancers wore colorful costumes and masks with lights. After the parade, it’s party time! Yes, it’s true. When Bacoleños party, they party hard. I’ve never seen as many bandstands in one street as I did during MassKara.

Lacson, Araneta and the Public Plaza were all crowded yet you’ll feel safe. Good thing there’s no more videoke in kiosks at the Public Plaza, only food and drinks were allowed. There’s also a lot of policemen roving the streets so the crowd were all there to enjoy without having to worry about their safety.

It was tiring, I admit but I had so much fun that I thought I wore my smile like a mask the whole time. Where I was a TV viewer before, this year I was taking part in the festivities. Like a small piece of the puzzle, somehow I felt without me, MassKara wouldn’t have been as fabulous. I hope everybody who took part in the festivities felt the same way. May you be part of the crowd or one of the organizers, the success of MassKara Festival was not only because of the local government and the organizers.

It was the success of everybody, especially the people of Bacolod who despite all the adversities in life still find the reasons to smile. That is how MassKara Festival started. Until hope remains in the hearts of the people, that is enough reason to smile and for MassKara to continue. Next year, the 30th MassKara Festival, you will still find me there on the streets of Bacolod. I hope to see you there too.
