First Pregnant Man is a Fil-Am
He is probably the first pregnant man, but he is pregnant no more. The 34 year-old Thomas Beatie gave birth to a baby girl last June 29, 2008. Well, if we are going to be technical about it, legally he’s a man since the State of Oregon is recognizing him as a man, but biologically , he’s still a woman.
He was born a baby girl, Tracy Laguindino, to a Caucasian mother and Filipino father in Hawaii. He underwent surgery to flatten his chest and took regular testosterone injections. No wonder he looks like a man complete with a beard.
He decided to keep his female reproductive organs because he and wife Nancy wanted to have a child. Nancy already had her womb removed due to medical reasons. He said this is already his second pregnancy but the first was an ectopic pregnancy and had to be aborted.
This issue has legal, political, and social implications. In Philippine laws where gay marriages are not recognized and your sex is the sex you were born with, he’s still a she. It’s confusing really. Where would he go to have a pee? Female of male restroom? Women would freak out if they see a bearded male inside the female restroom. On the other hand, most male restrooms here in the Philippines only have urinals, and since he has a female organ that would be very difficult. Although we Filipinos are slowly accepting them in our society, we are not yet ready to embrace them with open arms.
The couple has been featured in People magazine, appeared on Oprah and on CNN where Beatie had an ultrasound to prove that he is indeed pregnant. Pardon me, but I get goosebumps looking at his very pregnant picture.
Here’s the picture of his (her) baby girl named Susan Juliette.
