Dayo: Springboarding Filipino Animation

by PromdiBlogger on December 6, 2008

Dayo sa Mundo ng Elementalia is a story of a boy named Bubuy who goes to save his grandparents who have been abducted mystical beings from the land of Elementalia. Dayo is a first all Filipino fully digital animated movie to qualify in the Metro Manila Film Festival.

A New Take on Filipino Folklore Creatures

I think it is the first time that you’ll seeĀ  mythical creatures from Filipino folklore featured in a different perspective. We traditionally fear and revile mystical creatures such as aswang, manananggal, duwende, tikbalang and kapre but in Dayo, they take on a totally different role. Can you imagine being being friendly with an aswang? In Dayo, Bubuy will be aided in his quest to save his grandparents by Anna, a manananggal.

I know parents from the provinces tell these folklore stories to children in order to scare them. I wonder how these children would view the mystical creatures after watching this movie. Will this movie shatter the notion that these creatures exist?

I personally would want children to look at these mystical creatures the way they look at vampires. We may fear and revile them but as far as reality goes, they don’t exist at all. They’re just stories meant to make our childhood memorable. But it’s hard to do that when even adults believed in the existence of these creatures.

Filipino Animation at its Best

Dayo is already a big feat for our animators. We already know they have lent their talents to big Hollywood digital film makers such as Dreamworks but they aer not given credit for it since they are just being outsourced. This movie will be the springboard for our animators to go mainstream, to attract more investors in their craft so that they will continue to make full length movies.

The movie also has an all-star cast with voice talents of Laurice Guillen, Peque Gallaga, Nova Villa, Noel Trinidad, Pokwang, and Michael V with Nash Aguas as Bubuy and Katrina Legaspi as Anna.

No less than international star Lea Salonga sings the official theme “Lipad” and film scoring by Gerard Salonga with the 35-piece FILharmoniKA Orchestra so expect a very good soundtrack album.

As a line from Lipad goes, “Kung kaya mong isipin, kaya mong gawin” this movie is a proof that Filipinos can. The song serves as an inspiration to all Filipinos in whatever field of endeavor to aim high and reach for their dreams.

I will surely watch this movie and might even buy a DVD and the soundtrack. Let’s support Filipino talents.

Gladits,

Gumagaling na talaga sa animation ang Pinoy. Na-impress ako una sa Urduja eh. Maganda yung pagkakagawa. Tapos eto na naman. Hataw ang Pinoy sa animation ngayon dahil magagaling naman talaga ang mga artists natin.
