A close friend of mine who’s a Civil Engineer works in a construction in Saudi Arabia for several years now. I remember him telling me once that given a chance, he will transfer to the United Kingdom to look for better opportunities. However, he’s worried that he may find it hard to work in the construction industry in UK and may have to settle for menial jobs in fast food chains.
Finding a job is something we Filipinos should not worry about. That’s why there are millions of Filipinos, mostly contract workers, all over the world. As they say, if all the Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia quit their jobs, major constructions will stop. That’s why I am not worried about my friend not finding a job in the construction industry. What he has to worry about though is how he can prove his skills and experience and undergo training if needed in order to gain qualifications with the UK standards.
Fortunately I chanced upon the CSkills website. It provides information on how to gain qualification in order to work in the construction industry in the United Kingdom. It is a very comprehensive resource and provide details on apprenticeship programs, health safety legislations and career development specific to the construction industry. Those who are planning to work in the construction industry in the UK should use this site as reference in order to prepare themselves for the job. I’ve already emailed my friend regarding the website and asked him to share it with his colleagues. I hope he’ll be on his way to the UK soon.
