Merry Christmas! It’s unique in Filipino culture that as early as September when the “ber” months starts, the Christmas spirit is already felt. Starting this month, you will already hear Christmas songs being played on the radio. The breeze will be a little colder, the mood a little jollier.

We Pinoys celebrate Christmas the longest. At this time, most Pinoys will already start making their Christmas list of relatives, friends and inaanaks who will be given gifts. Starting November 15, houses will already be decorated with Christmas trees, parols and Christmas lights. I look forward to the Simbang Gabi starting December 16. Although I haven’t completed the whole nine days, it’s still something I always anticipate. I don’t mind waking up at 4 a.m. in the morning during Simbang Gabi.
Christmas also mean reunions! Get-together parties with long-time friends and homecoming parties for OFW buddies. We also spend more bonding moments with close relatives during Christmas. So that means more gastronomic treats! And I mean really pigging out. There’s always a dinner somewhere so be prepared to gain a few pounds.
Christmas in the Philippines! Walang ganyan sa States or anywhere else in the world.
