Chinese cheating at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

“China invented civilization in the East, but as well it invented corruption for all of human civilization.”

Sounds familiar? That’s because it’s what Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago said during the peak of the senate hearing on the NBN-ZTE deal last year. She apologized for that remark when the Filipino-Chinese community expressed their indignation.

But it seemed to me, that quote from Inday Miriam is haunting the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Allegations of the Chinese cheating in their own hosting of the Olympics is rigging the Games. Chinese women gymnasts were allegedly too young to qualify for the competition. A gymnast should be at least 16 years old in order to compete.

Three girls - He Kexin, Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan - are under age if online sports registration lists in China are correct. However, International Gymnastics Federation said those gymnasts were eligible and that the ages on their passports were correct. But who issues their Passports? The Chinese government of course. So if proven that they are indeed under age, the Chinese government or whoever is responsible for tampering with the documents, should be held accountable.

The Americans will not let them out that easy now that they lost the women’s gymnastics team Gold medal to the Chinese.  The Chinese girls look young to be 16 years old but that will not prove anything. However, local newspaper articles as well as local competition records will prove that age of these girls. Unless they would claim that their local media had made such a wide scale mistake in reporting their facts. It is now up to the Internationl Olympic Committee to investigate. The Chinese women’s gymnastics team did really well but if proven that they are not even qualified to compete, it’s only proper to strip them of their gold medal.

In the end, China will win,” may not be true at all times.

Yup, on Youtube. They’re amazing really but that’s beside the point. There are rules to follow. It’s a pity that there’s an age limit to it.

Remember years ago that the Pinoys won a junior Baseball League but it was found out that some team members were over age? Some were angered that it was a Pinoy who squealed about it. But hey, cheating is still cheating. If we win thru cheating, indi na lang.

this should be treated in similar fashion as doping.

it took many years before marion jones was stripped of her title. Time will reveal the real age of these tiny athletes.

@ceblogger - I agree with you Ceb. Can a country file a protest if it’s cheating made by judges? I just remembered our own Onyok Velasco. Anybody who watched that fight would know that he deserved to win that Gold. Did we even make a protest if there’s a venue for that?
