The votes are in and the Philippines topped yesterday’s Earth Hour with the most number of registrant cities, towns and districts in Asia according to Earth Hour website. I say we should since we are already on the list of Biodiversity Hotspots.
Everyday, our forests are threatened by logging and other human activities, endangering our rich flora and fauna. Only 7% of our original forests remain today. Our coral reefs are damaged are likewise damaged by the increase in ocean temperature due to global warming. As the second largest archipelago in the world, we are very dependent on the abundance of our seas. It is only but fitting that we should be involved in preserving our environment.
What can one hour switching off of lights do? If the number of local government units which registered for the Earth Hour is an indication of the awareness of the need to stop global warning then we are on the right track. I just hope commitment comes with it too.
I also participated in last night’s Earth Hour at home as I have in the 2008 Earth Hour. One of the reasons why I love living in the province is that at least, we can say that we live our lives a lot simpler and get to enjoy nature or what’s left of it.

That’s true. The people in Philippine provinces know how to work with the sun. They rise before sunrise and finish their work when the sun sets. I admire that. It’s the people in the city, people like me who suck up too much electric energy. So anything to offset that or minimize consumption is necessary.
